Chennai: The entire Opposition has been evicted from the Tamil Nadu Assembly after All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) leader J Jayalalithaa demanded that the Centre dismiss the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government.

Jayalalithaa and the Opposition were protesting Thursday's clash between the lawyers and the police at the Madras High Court.

The state government issued a statement saying that the violence started because lawyers resisted arrest over the attack on Monday on Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy.

Lawyers allege that 500 policemen in riot gear attacked them as they protested the arrest of a colleague. Over 200 lawyers were arrested.

However, police say that they were trying to calm the rampaging advocates and Swamy claimed that pro-LTTE lawyers were taking out their frustration.

Tamil Nadu DGP K P Jain said "The police is a disciplined lot and they acted only on order. This is not the first time that such clashes have happened. It is unfortunate that it happened. The lawyers are too excitable. It is only a small percentage of lawyers who indulge in such things."

"Those lawyers who have been identified are known to be LTTE (supporters). One of them has been arrested last night. He is also well known to be LTTE (supporter). The MDMK which is highly pro-LTTE party has been supporting this behaviour," said Swamy.

The civil war in Sri Lanka between the army and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is now clearly raising the heat in Tamil Nadu and the Madras High Court has called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the clashes.

A full bench headed by acting Chief Justice SJ Mukhopadyay has also ordered all courts in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry to remain closed on Friday. It has also constituted three separate committees of court officials and lawyers to study and report the extent of damages during Thursday's clashes.

The case on the violence will be heard on March 2 by a three-member bench.

Meanwhile, angry MLAs have reacted strongly to their eviction from the Tamil Nadu Assembly. "If we are not allowed to raise such important issues in the Assembly, then where will we go? We have been pushed out," they say, adding that the state government must be dissolved.
