Third Front not possible without Samajwadi Party: Mulayam Singh Yadav
Mulayam's statement came hours after J Jayalalithaa entered into an alliance with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) for LS polls.

New Delhi: Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav on Monday asserted that a 'Third Front' will not be possible without his party. "Third Front will not be possible without Samajwadi party as UP has more seats than any other state," he said.

Mulayam's statement came just hours after AIADMK chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa entered into an alliance with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) for the Lok Sabha elections.

Left parties are trying to stitch up a secular democratic front along with AIADMK, JDU, BJD, JDS, Samajwadi Party and a few other regional parties.

The 14 regional parties say they do not want a tie up with either the Congress or the BJP and will be holding a meeting in the national capital on February 5.

The parties are drawn by their own political compulsions as they are aware that just ahead of general elections, it wouldn't be in their interest to be seen either with the UPA or NDA. For the minority votebank sensitive the SP and JDU - the BJP is almost untouchable now and the Congress is an undesirable partner.

But as earlier attempts at forming a front have failed, both the BJP and the Congress are cynical.

There are other problems too as most of the regional leaders nurture prime ministerial ambitions and it would be difficult to meet and reconcile them. Moreover, history has also shown that these parties often bend where the wind is blowing. In the end, he who has the larger number gets the support.

What's your reaction?
