Kolkata: A group of Trinamool Congress workers allegedly assaulted some Election Commission officers in the Manikchak area of Malda Dakshin constituency. They destroyed the cameras belonging to the Election Commission officers.
The attack reportedly took place when the officials were trying to stop a Trinamool two-wheeler rally which is forbidden under Commission rules and were attempting to take pictures of the rally.
West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Amit Roychowdhury said that two FIRs have been filed. The DM has filed 2 FIRs - one on the assault on Election Commission officers and the other on the unauthorised two wheeler rally. "We are still awaiting a detailed report from the Malda DM on this case. The DM has confirmed that the rally was organised by the TMC. The EC is actively considering what steps need to be taken to prevent such recurrent assault on our officers," he said.
TMC candidate from the Malda Dakshin seat, Dr Moazzem Hossain, was conducting his election campaign and road show with around 200-250 two wheelers.
While no arrests have been made so far, this is the third instance of attack on EC officials in Bengal by the TMC after similar instances in Habra in North 24 Parganas district and Howrah.
