Guwahati: The sole heir to the 800-year-old Manikya royalty of Tripura and the state working president of the Congress party, Maharaja Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, ruled out media reports of his possibility of joining the BJP.
Speaking to News18 over telephone, he said, “I do get offers to join the BJP but my entire family members are/were emotionally attached to the Congress. Getting offers from BJP is nothing new. But the fact is… It’s now up to me to make up my mind. To be more precise, the issue is not BJP or Congress. The real issue is my personal, rather than political, fight with the CPM in Tripura. Right now, I am on my way to Delhi to meet senior Congress leaders.”
“They (the CPI-M) have taken my property. They have taken my palaces. Right now my focus is to defeat the CPM in Tripura as Pradyot Debbarma. More than a political, it is a personal fight to me because CPI (M) never criticizes the Congress. They criticized my father, my mother, my grandmother. They criticize me. I have several cases going on against them. So, there cannot be a love-hate relationship with them. Now the Congress has to realize how to use Pradyot to defeat the CPM,” he said.
Pradyot added: “The Congress party has to give me enough power to defeat the CPM and if not - then I will defeat them on my own. My fight against the Marxists in Tripura will continue with or without Congress and BJP. Thousands of Congress workers lost their lives under the Left rule in Tripura. Lakhs were rendered jobless because of communist policies. I cannot stay silent.”
Sources revealed that the AICC may offer Pradyot a prominent role at the national level which is why he was asked to meet senior party leaders in Delhi amid media speculations that he may switch over to the BJP.
