New Delhi: Refusing to call the Uttar Pradesh result a debacle, the Congress on Tuesday said its anti-Mayawati campaign succeeded but it could not capitalise on the momentum built by party icon Rahul Gandhi due to lack of infrastructure.
"The Congress was the first to start the oust Mayawati campaign, but we could not take the benefit due to lack of party infrastructure... The Samajwadi Party was able to do that precisely for that reason," said Minister of State for Communications Sachin Pilot.
Stating that Rahul Gandhi had led the campaign against Chief Minister Mayawati from the front, Pilot said the fight for Uttar Pradesh would go on till the 2014 parliamentary polls.
"Rahulji led the party campaign from the front," said Pilot.
Minister of State for Petroleum R P N Singh also agreed with the leader.
"Rahul Gandhi was the star campaigner... It was because of him that people were talking about the Congress in the state," Singh said. "He will fight in the state for the next decade."
The Samajwadi Party seemed set to return to power in Uttar Pradesh, pushing the BSP to the second spot. The Congress could finish third or in the fourth slot.
Pilot and Singh said the party brass would take stock of the factors behind the results. "Organisation is the key. We need to work on it," said Pilot.
