Dr Neelkanth Tiwari of BJP leads against other candidates for Varanasi South seat, constituency No. 389 of Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly.
The main candidates from Varanasi seat, apart from Tiwari were, Rakesh Tripathi (BSP), Rajesh Mishra (Congress) and Shivnath Yadav (CPM).
The BJP won this constituency in the last Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections held in 2012. Shyamdev Roy Chaudhari, the winning BJP candidate, got 57,868 votes. Dayashankar Mishra of Congress, the nearest contender, got 44,046 votes and lost by 13,822 votes. The voter turnout was 55.49 %.
Elections to 403 seats of Uttar Pradesh were held over 7 phases from February 4 to March 8.
Exit polls had predicted the BJP emerging first in Uttar Pradesh with the Samajwadi Party- Congress alliance emerging second and Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party emerging a distant third.
