New Delhi: A year ahead of Punjab Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party has reached out to cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu. Worried about the prospects of the party in the upcoming polls, party emissaries met Sidhu twice to pacify him.
The move came after party's massive debacle in Delhi and Bihar Assembly elections.
Sidhu has been sulking after he was denied ticket from Amritsar in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and instead fielded Finance Minister Arun Jaitey, who lost by a huge margin.
According to sources, the BJP believed that Sidhu could be the ideal catch for the Aam Aadmi Party which is trying to flex muscles in Punjab. The BJP sources also added that Sidhu has made it clear that the rapprochement is possible only if the party reconsiders its ties with the Akali Dal.
Sidhu has been at loggerheads with the BJP ally Shiromani Akali Dal in Punjab for a long time.
The BJP top leadership will meet party MLAs and leaders from Punjab on Saturday in Delhi to chart future course of action.
