Goa: There seems to be a huge divide within the BJP on whether to make Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi the campaign committee chief for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls or not. Many leaders are skipping the national executive meet in Goa this weekend where the big decision on Modi is expected. Sources say a few senior leaders including LK Advani and Sushma Swaraj want more time before a decision on Modi as the campaign committee chief is taken.
The question now is as to what Modi's elevation means. The elevation of Modi will lead to an end of the Advani-Vajpayee era. Since BJP's formation in 1980, the party has been controlled by Advani and Vajpayee
As Vajpayee faded away, Advani's authority hasn't ever been challenged within the party. With Modi's elevation, BJP's dual power centre philosophy will also come to an end with total power being wrested in Modi.
The move may also affect the BJP's relationship with its ally Janata Dal United. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will be hard pressed to quit the NDA if Modi is elevated.
However, Modi may use his prominence to bring the AIADMK within the NDA. The Congress on the other hand will continue to woo Nitish Kumar and look for an alliance with him before the next elections.
