Chennai: A senior woman leader of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has objected to the high command's decision to part with a seat allotted by the DMK to meet Congress demand for 63 seats in the April 13 Assembly polls. The IUML had "compromised on its dignity and self-respect," by allowing a seat to be taken away, party's state Women's Wing organiser Fathima Muzaffer told reporters here.
Describing as "unilateral" the IUML high command's decision to part with a seat, she demanded that the party's national president and Union Minister E Ahamed and state unit chief Khader Mohideen resign over the matter. "We however are not against the high command of DMK or Congress. Our party high command's unilateral decision to part with a seat has not gone down well with both the Muslim community and IUML," she claimed.
Muzaffer said the IUML should be given its "due share" of three seats and insisted that the party contest only on its own symbol (ladder). She said the party's General Council and Exceutive were likely to be convened soon to review the situation. She did not rule out aligning with another party.
According to the IUML's seat-sharing pact with DMK, it was initally allotted three seats and announced that its candidates would fight on the DMK's symbol, the rising sun. However, it had to forego a seat alongwith PMK, when Congress remained firm on its demand for 63 seats, which had strained its ties with its key southern ally.
Ahmed had said his party's "generosity" of giving away a seat and settling for two was instrumental in ending the impasse borne out of seat-sharing differences between DMK and Congress.
