Tamil movies have ruled the box office this year. From Thalapathy Vijay-starrer action film Leo to superstar Rajinikanth’s action comedy movie Jailer, 2023 was all about blockbuster films. As we are set to bid farewell to the year, the theatre owners across Tamil Nadu have released a list of the highest-grossing films of this year. Let’s take a look at the top five films on this list.
1. Leo: Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the film stars Thalapathy Vijay and Trisha Krishnan as the main leads. It has topped the box office, according to most theatre owners. Leo, which was made on a budget of Rs 250 crore, collected 620.50 crore worldwide. It also emerged as the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2023. As per reports, the film had a huge impact on first-day ticket sales, and Thalapathy Vijay fans flocked to buy tickets at the theatres. Based on this, the movie Leo has secured the first place in this list.
2. Jailer: Rajinikanth’s Jailer, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, became one of the biggest hits of the year. Jailer, which has collected up to Rs 600 crore worldwide, dominated the theatres in Tamil Nadu. Jailer is ranked second on this list based on an average of most theatres awarding Jailer a top-two spot. It also became the second-highest-grossing Tamil film of 2023.
3. Thunivu: The action-heist film Thunivu bagged third place. The movie was written and directed by H Vinoth and produced by Boney Kapoor. It stars Ajith Kumar in the lead role, with Manju Warrier, Samuthirakani, John Kokken, Ajay, and Veera in supporting roles. The film grossed around Rs 200 crore at the box office, and was made on a budget of Rs 200 crore.
4. Varisu: Directed by Vamshi Paidipally and starring Vijay and Rashmika Mandanna as the main leads, the film was released at the beginning of the year during Pongal. The movie grossed around Rs 290–310 crore at the box office. This action drama film has been given the fourth position.
5. Ponniyin Selvan 2: This epic historical action drama film, directed by Mani Ratnam and starring Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, and Jayaram in the lead roles was a huge hit at the box office. The first part created huge expectations, the second part has given good collections to the theatre owners. Based on this, most theatre owners gave the Ponniyin Selvan 2 movie the fifth highest grossing movie in their theatres.
