Apple iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus: Rumoured specs, speculated availability, and everything you should know about the upcoming iPhones
Apple is expected to host its next iPhone launch on September 9, so what can we expect when Tim Cook takes to the stage to unveil the new device?

While the Internet is abuzz with reports that the next-gen iPhones are coming on September 9, Apple expectedly is yet to give any hint as to when it plans to host the launch event. We may not have any official launch date as yet, but the Cupertino tech giant is highly expected to unveil successors to its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones next month - and most likely on September 9.

Going by the company's past behaviour, Apple is believed to unveil what could be named iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, where the 's' suffix usually means more speed. Based on rumours, leaks and speculations, we have compiled for you a list of features and enhancements that the new iPhone(s) could come with.

1. Sources believe that the new iPhones will feature Apple's new Force Touch technology, which can distinguish between a light tap and deep press. Unveiled in March in the trackpads of its new MacBooks, Force Touch can respond differently to different types of pressure, so the weight of a tap or a swipe could conceivably activate specific features or open specific apps.

2. A German Apple news site reports that the new iPhones will be a tad thicker than the last year's models. That, however, will a negligible increase in thickness. It is believed that the increase in thickness could be because of the company's new Force Touch technology that are likely to be integrated in the new iPhones.

3. Citing an internal leak from a major French carrier (whose name has been withheld), tech website mac4ever reports that Apple will start taking orders for the iPhones from September 11, while they will go on sale starting September 18.

4. The iPhone 6s and its phablet counterpart, the iPhone 6s Plus, are expected to get a processor bump. The new iPhones are believed to come with an A9 chip, which is claimed to speed up the performance and improve the battery life.

5. If rumours are to be believed, the new iPhones could come in pink metal - in additional to regular silver, grey, and gold colours.

6. Leaked images of the purported iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus models suggest that the new phones will have protruding rear cameras like their predecessors. Also, the cameras on the new iPhones are likely to come with improvements - in terms of both technology and megapixel count. Business Insider, citing sources, reports that Apple has upped the megapixel count on the upcoming devices. The new iPhones will come with a 12-megapixel camera, an increase from the 8 megapixel sensor on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. But the new iPhones will also have a five-element lens quite like the current flagships. The company, reportedly, is considering the six-element lens being for the iPhone 7, which is expected to be announced next year. Rear cameras on the OnePlus 2 and the last year's Samsung Galaxy S5, however, come with a six-element lens.

7. The new iPhones are likely to come in 32 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB storage variants. For the iPhone 6s, Apple may drop the 16 GB variant as the entry-level model, and could introduce the 32 GB variant as the base model.

8. On the design front, the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are not expected to come with any noticeable changes. The company is likely to keep the display sizes for both the phones same as their predecessors i.e., 4.7-inch for the iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch for the phablet counterpart. The upcoming iPhones are likely to come scratch-resistant sapphire glass displays.

9. The otherwise successful launch of the large-screen iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus was initially marred by 'bendgate', wherein people complained of the phones bending in their pockets. The company, therefore, this time can switch to a sturdier aluminium body.

10. Alongside the new phones, Apple is also expected to finally unveil its next-generation Apple TV set-top box, which will have a stronger focus on apps and gaming and will come with a completely reimagined remote control.

The popular speculations side with the possible iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus names for the next-gen iPhone models, but according to our source, who has access to information on Apple's future product lineup plans, the next iPhone could very well be called the "iPhone Air".

While Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus on September 9, it is rumoured to unveil the successor to its iPhone 5c/5s model sometime later this year. Rumours suggest that the third iPhone of the year will have high-end specs in a more compact 4-inch body.

Apple's growing popularity with those who crave a larger screen is why Samsung decided to break with its own traditions and launched its next phablet, the Galaxy Note 5, almost a month before, rather than waiting until the International IFA in September. The South Korean giant apparently wants its device on sale before Apple has a chance to announce its next iPhone.
