Apple's Big AI Push With Its ChatGPT Rival Could Be Revealed On This Day
Apple's generative AI LLM called 'Ajax' could be introduced alongside iOS 18 at its WWDC 2024 event.

Apple is reportedly planning to unveil its own large language model (LLM) at its upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The model is expected to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini LLM, and others from Amazon and Meta.

Gurman says Apple’s AI tools are way behind the curve, especially since ChatGPT came out in 2022. But it is expected to be introduced with iOS 18, which will have a large language model called Ajax. Gurman says Apple has been testing it since early last year.

With regards to real-world implementation within applications, Apple may be planning to add auto-summarization and auto-complete features to applications such as Keynote and Pages. Additionally, the iPhone maker is also considering adding AI features to Apple Music, potentially introducing automatic playlist creation. An overhaul is also planned for Siri.

Additionally, there are reports that Apple is developing a system to streamline the process for AppleCare employees, making it more convenient for them to assist customers with troubleshooting and queries.

That said, Apple is making progress, it’s still behind the competition. Gurman thinks that it’ll take Apple until at least 2025 to fully scale its generative AI vision. Meanwhile, Google and Samsung, two of Apple’s biggest rivals in the Android space, are ramping up their AI offerings.

Google has already released multiple AI-centric features with its Pixel 8 lineup with Gemini Nano integration, and Samsung is planning to make its upcoming Galaxy S24 series all about AI, with a focus on ‘Galaxy AI.’
