A new report has claimed that a growing number of iPhone users have encountered an annoying bug in iOS 17 that causes the app switcher to unexpectedly appear while they are typing. This bug has been reported by multiple users across various platforms, indicating a widespread issue, MacRumors said.
According to MacRumors, on Apple Community forums and Reddit, many people are sharing similar stories about getting unexpectedly kicked out of apps like Messages and Notes while typing.
This happens because they accidentally tap the screen just as the app switcher appears, leading them to end up in a different app in the middle of typing.
A persistent iOS 17 bug seems to specifically affect users who type rapidly on the virtual keyboard. The issue has been observed across all iOS 17 versions, including the latest iOS 17.1.2 update.
Some users have even reported experiencing the bug on replacement devices, indicating that Apple may not be fully aware of the problem’s scope.
While the precise cause of the bug remains unclear, it is suspected to be linked to iOS 17’s gesture recognition system. The system may be misinterpreting certain typing gestures as app-switching commands, leading to the unintended behaviour, as per reports.
Apple has yet to officially acknowledge the bug, but it is anticipated to be addressed in a future iOS update. In the interim, affected users can attempt to minimize the disruption by restarting their iPhones or temporarily disabling the app switcher gesture.
While Apple works on resolving the problem, MacRumors suggests a temporary solution. Reachability, an optional feature that brings down the top half of the screen for easier access, seems to be linked to the typing bug. Here’s how you can turn it off:
– Open Settings on your iPhone.
– Tap on Accessibility.
– Under “Physical and Motor,” choose Touch.
– Turn off the switch next to Reachability.
By disabling Reachability, the typing bug seems to be prevented for everyone affected, indicating a potential sensitivity issue connected to this accessibility feature, the report said.
