New Delhi: Just two days after Motorola launched the new Moto E in India, Xiaomi has introduced the successor to the Redmi 1S in India.

Named Redmi 2, the new phone from Xiaomi is priced in India at Rs 6,999. Registrations for the Redmi 2 begin on March 12 at 6pm. The phone will go on sale on Flipkart from March 24. It will be available in India in two colours - white and grey.

The Redmi 2 features a 4.7-inch (1280x720) IPS display, 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz, 1GB RAM, 8-megapixel rear camera, and a 2-megapixel front camera. The dual-SIM Redmi 2 has an internal storage space of 8GB (expandable up to 32GB).

Xiaomi's Hugo Barra says the company will soon launch a limited edition variant of the Redmi 2 with 16GB flash and 2GB RAM in India.

The new phone, which is thinner and lighter than the Redmi 1S, is said to charge 20 per cent faster than its predecessor. Also, both the SIM slots in the Redmi 2 support 4G network.

Citing an IDC report, Xiaomi India head Manu Jain said that the company became No. 5 smartphone maker in India in Q4.

The Redmi 2 was unveiled globally in the first week of January.

Xiaomi sold a whopping 61.12 million smartphones in 2014, up 227 per cent year on year.
