Three women’s recent Airbnb experience in the US took an unexpected turn when they found that the bed in their Nebraska-based rental home was not what it seemed. Upon inspection, they found the bed was actually made of two folding tables. According to a report by the New York Post, Kristen Downard, a 28-year-old cheerleading coach from Florida, shared this bizarre incident on TikTok. Downard’s post quickly gained attention on social media, gathering 8.7 million views before deleting it.
Downard, speaking to The Post, revealed that her sister and two friends first found the unusual setup. “When my sister sent me the video of the tables under the comforter, my mouth literally dropped open,” she shared, adding that while Airbnb stays can often be quirky, this particular situation “takes the cake.” For privacy reasons, she chose to keep her sister’s identity private, but the video itself sparked widespread conversation and debate online.
In the since-deleted clip, the women pull back the comforter to expose the makeshift bed, describing the setup as “an illusion.”
Many viewers found humour in the situation. Comments poured in, with one user saying, “That money would have to be back in my account the second I unveiled that blanket.”
Another remarked, “I always check for bed bugs but now I have to check for BEDS!!?!?,” while one user expressing shock over the revelation wrote, “This is so illegal.”
The report also mentioned other unusual cases where a Canadian content creator named Kennedy Calwell had to abruptly leave her Airbnb after discovering a hidden camera in an electrical socket. “In the bathroom, one of the outlets was faced directly to the shower,” she explained in a TikTok video. She and her friends, who were there for a birthday bash, didn’t waste any time getting out and called the cops, who later came in and found the cameras.
Similarly, another troubling incident involved Erica Watkins, 23, who left her rental in the southern United States after finding racially offensive decor inside the property.
While Downard’s sister’s experience wasn’t as alarming as some of these other cases, it still left a strong impact. However, Downard later expressed regret for sharing the video without her sister’s consent, stating, “I felt bad for her,” acknowledging the massive attention the clip garnered.
