Delhi Man Flags Uber Driver's Scam Who Showed Him 'Fake' Screenshot of Double Fare
Viral Post: Delhi man claims he was duped by an Uber taxi driver who charged him double the original fare after showing a fake screenshot.

A Delhi man recently recounted an incident involving an alleged scam by an Uber taxi driver, who purportedly charged him double the fare. This narrative unfolded when a man, fresh off a late-night arrival at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport with his father, opted for an Uber ride to drop them home. Little did he know, he was about to become entangled in what seemed to be a recurring scam.

Detailing the incident in the ‘Delhi’ subreddit, the user, identified as @Why_am_i_alive0, recounted how he and his father touched down in Delhi around 10:30 p.m. on March 24. With the Uber app quoting a fare of Rs. 340 for the journey, they booked their ride.

However, upon reaching his destination, the driver demanded Rs. 648, almost double the booked amount. “When I reached my destination the driver asked me [Rs] 648, I asked what ?!! That’s almost double the cost of which I booked for. I asked for the screen which showed the payment to confirm,” vented the OP.

To his surprise, the driver showed him a screenshot displaying the fare as Rs. 648, citing waiting charges as the reason for the increase. But this explanation didn’t sit well with the man, as there was no traffic or stops during the trip.

Despite his suspicions, the man decided to avoid a confrontation and paid the amount. Upon closer inspection of the photo, discrepancies surfaced—his name had been misspelt, and peculiarly, two Uber app icons floated on the screen.

Armed with this evidence, the man concluded that he had fallen victim to a scam. Promptly reaching out to Uber customer care, he learned that the driver had reported collecting a mere Rs. 127.48.

“They said the driver reported that he collected Rs. 127.48 only,” he claimed in his Reddit post, expressing disappointment at not receiving the full refund. He, then cautioned others to be vigilant when using cab services and to pay only the amount shown on the app.

Speculating further, the OP assumed, “The driver supposedly used a spoof app to show wrong payment information. I guess he was not in his senses and typed the wrong name. He even talked so much while travelling to distract us into thinking he’s a good person.”

My colleague had booked the cab and he got off early and mine was the last stop. Driver showed me the same kind of screen as you. I told my friend about the same and asked him to file a complaint. Don’t know if he did or not.”
