In April 2018, German billionaire Karl-Erivan Haub vanished mysteriously while preparing for a ski race near Switzerland’s Matterhorn peak. The former managing director of Tengelmann Group disappeared without a trace after he was last seen heading up the mountain alone. Despite massive search operations, involving helicopters and rescuers searching the area for six days, Haub was never found.
After three years, he was officially declared dead. However, recent reports brought a shocking twist to the tale. According to a major investigation by German broadcaster RTL, Haub is believed to be alive and is currently living in Moscow with his Russian mistress, Veronika Ermilova.
The Cologne public prosecutor’s office has launched an inquiry against Karl-Erivan’s brother Christian Haub, the current head of the Tengelmann Group, for allegedly making false statements under oath. According to senior public prosecutor Ulrich Bremer, the investigation began after a criminal complaint was filed against Christian, accusing him of providing inaccurate information in the Cologne district court in May 2021.
The complaint suggests that Haub may have reliable evidence about his missing brother and he could still be alive. However, Bremer clarified that there is currently not enough reason to challenge the official declaration of Karl-Erivan’s death. Christian’s lawyer, Mark Binz, refuted the allegations and called them incorrect information.
Reportedly, there were doubts that Karl-Erivan Haub had interacted with Veronika Ermilova days before his disappearance in 2018. Haub allegedly called Ermilova 13 times in three days. Some of these calls were lengthy, including one that lasted for over an hour, leading to speculations that he might have been planning to fake his death with the help of Moscow and Ermilova.
Now that the case is in the spotlight, as per Daily Mail, Ermilova clarified that she knew Haub and they had a business relationship. Even she hasn’t heard from him since the incident. As per the portal, speaking with local media, she said, “I only had a working relationship with him. I don’t live with a German billionaire in Moscow, this is fake. There is no billionaire in my circle, I am married, and I have a child. The company owned by this person, they were our clients. We learned in 2018 that he disappeared in the mountains and someone in Germany is trying to say that he was found in Moscow. This has not been confirmed at all. He was officially declared dead in Germany.”
Meanwhile, the investigation by RTL also uncovered Veronika Ermilova’s background, who runs an event agency, organising outdoor activities. Additionally, she also has ties with Russia’s FSB security service.
