Preparing for competitive civil service exams is no easy feat. It takes consistent preparation for several years before the aspirants succeed. Recently, Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer Anupam Sharma shared how his parents always had his back and supported him throughout his prep.
Along with a photo of an AC, he wrote about how his parents bought it in 2014 and installed it in his room so that he could study “with greater comfort & focus in summers.” He described this gesture as “a glimpse of efforts put in by middle-class parents for their children’s future”. His post has over seven lakh views since it was shared on April 7.
This is the only AC my parents had ever purchased, ~10 years back in 2014.It was installed in my room, so that I can prepare for competitive exams with greater comfort & focus in summers????.

Touched by Sharma’s post, many people shared instances where their parents went out of their way to support their studies. An X user wrote, “My parents also only installed AC in mine and my sister’s rooms, while we were students. They used a fan. The unwavering love and compassion of parents is beyond belief. Bless them.”

However, some people were less impressed by Sharma and argued that his upbringing was not “middle class” but very privileged as per Indian standards.
Expressing this sentiment, another person wrote, “Having AC is luxury and same is reflected in gst rate. Actual middle can neither afford ac nor afford it’s electricity. I come from typical middle class family and we don’t have ac at our home and only have coolers and same story with all middle class homes in my city&locality.”

Another person wrote, “People in replies are ignoring the fact that for some buying an AC can also be a part of the struggle.”

One person asked Sharma why couldn’t he afford an AC on his own, considering that he graduated from IIT-Delhi and worked in General Electric. Posing this question, they wrote, “Isn’t it be a shame that you couldn’t afford it yourself despite being an IIT Delhi grad & having worked at an MNC like General Electric ? Infact, you should have installed one for them.”

Interestingly a few people also noted that Sharma’s post reminded them of a scene from the 2009 film 3 Idiots.

In the scene, Farhan Quereshi’s (R. Madhavan) father, played by actor Parikshit Sahni, says that when they bought an AC they installed it in Farhan’s room so he could study in peace.
