Despite the soaring real estate prices, it looks like people are still not receiving the desired quality of housing, especially in metropolitan cities. Kolkata’s New Town area, known for housing some of the most modern and developing infrastructure in the city, also seems to be under the same growing concern. Ripudaman, a Kolkata-based civil engineer, recently expressed frustration over a water leakage in his Rs 1.5 crore apartment in a highrise. The user shared a picture of the leakage on the X platform and wrote, “My room in 1.5CR apartment 5th/16th floor is leaking water. These expensive buildings are such a scam bro! The civil engineer inside me can’t comprehend this.”

While he didn’t name the building or the complex where he resides, it is clear that the highrise has 16 floors, and his flat is on the fifth one. The comment section confirms that it is located in Newtown, the well-known IT hub of Kolkata, which has several highrises and apartment complexes.
Social media users quickly took notice of the tweet and shared their reactions. While some chose to deliberate on the possible cause of the problem, others shared similar experiences. A user wrote, “Might be a leakage in the floor above you. Happened to us. Upper floor had a leakage in the pipe and this started happening. If not fixed, drops will start falling slowly. Best is to have a standalone house.”

“Unfortunately, this is what is happening in most of the places. The material they use is not of premium quality though they charge a premium for the apartments,” a comment read.

A user suggested, “Get one upper guy’s apartment’s pipe fixed. He/She may have even paid more than this due to the floor rise price increase!!”

Notably, this post starkly compares the high cost of living in metropolitan areas with the subpar construction quality in premium buildings. As a result, it has now ignited discussions over how developers are compromising standards to maximise profits.
