The horrifying rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor have not only shocked the entire nation but also sparked widespread protests. The gruesome incident has highlighted the growing issue of sexual violence against women and raised concerns over women’s safety. Speaking of which, a video of a social media influencer has recently surfaced online and she shared items women should include in their festive shopping list.
In the wake of the tragic incident, content creator Shreyasi Biswas recently took to her Instagram, sharing her shopping list for the upcoming Durga Puja festival. In the video, she advises women to carry self-defence items such as an alarm keychain, pepper spray and a mini knife as a precautionary measure during pandal hopping.
The discussion sparked a sea of reaction, with some highlighting the urgency of finding solutions to ensure the safety and security of women in India, while others advocated for practical safety measures.
Sharing the disheartening video, the Instagram user captioned, “Never thought I will ever have to make a video on women’s safety staying in Kolkata!! Our safety is so vulnerable and endangered in a system like this that women need to take care of themselves, be alert in their workplaces, and must carry safety self-defence tools all the time in their bags!!”

The video shared a week ago has since accumulated nearly 74,000 likes and more than 7.6 lakh views. Within no time, social media viewers shared their take and flooded the comments section with varied comments. While some expressed that they were heartbroken by the incident, others highlighted the need for systemic change to address the root causes of violence against women.
“Didi, this is so sad. But every Bengali woman has this one thing in mind right now. Kolkata is no longer safe for women,” expressed a user.
Another added, “Feels so heartbreaking, but this is the reality! Sad.”
“Still, you can’t defend yourself if five men attack you… It’s the psychology and mindset on which education should be provided to both genders!” said an Instagram user.
An individual commented, “It’s just so sad that it comes to a situation where we have to buy safety tools to protect ourselves from the opposite gender.”
“Couldn’t agree more,” echoed a few.
However, a few also chastised her, claiming that she is an “opportunist” exploiting a horrific incident. “People like you find an opportunity in every situation. Pathetic condition in our country,” posted a user.
