Bars and restaurants often enforce minimum age limits for entry, typically aligning with the legal drinking age in the city. Additionally, some fine dining establishments or eateries with open grills and hot stoves on tables may restrict entry to children under six or seven for safety and ambience reasons. However, a Caribbean food restaurant in Florissant, Missouri, USA, called Bliss Restaurant, is generating attention for its unique age limit policy. In a Facebook post, the restaurant announced, “To ensure a grown and sexy atmosphere, we require all guests to be 30 or older for women and 35 or older for men."
The cafe further explained this decision and wrote, “This policy helps us maintain a sophisticated environment, uphold our standards, and support the sustainability of our unique ambience." This post soon raked in hundreds of comments in which people debated whether this was a fair or reasonable policy.
Supporting the restaurant, a Facebook user wrote, “Yes and I ABSOLUTELY love the Vibe and Ambiance! You did an Excellent job bringing an upscale venue to North County and I’m loving every bit of it!! Don’t change a thing."
Another person wrote, “I’m happy about the age limit cause we are tired of not being able to enjoy our city! The only ppl upset are the younger folks. Everywhere they go, they’re fighting, shooting, etc…. It’s nice to have a grown & sexy environment!"
Someone else wrote, “I understand the need for setting an age limit to protect businesses. However, it’s important to acknowledge that places like this do allow family members and friends in without meeting the age restriction. Additionally, age does not guarantee behaviour, as there are individuals above the age of 30-35 who may still engage in disruptive behaviour. It’s crucial to address the issue of behaviour rather than solely focusing on age restrictions."
Sharing a similar concern, another person wrote, “May I ask why the men have to be older than the women? I would love to be able to come with my fiancé (who’s older than me), but he’s not 35 for 2 more years. Side note: I LOVE the fact that an age limit has been put in place in general."
In many places, businesses are prohibited from discriminating based on race, sex, religion and national origin under federal and state laws. However, age is not considered a protected category under these anti-discrimination laws
