The highly advanced infrastructure of Dubai was battered by a record-breaking rainstorm that hit the region earlier this week. On April 15, April 16 and April 17, a rainstorm hit Dubai, surpassing UAE’s annual rainfall average in just a few days. The rainstorm halted operations at Dubai Airport, flooded the malls and swept away cars across the roads. This was the heaviest rainfall, the UAE had seen in the past 75 years, causing chaos in the city and igniting worry about climate change around the world. UAE’s state-run weather agency has labelled the unlikely rains as “a historic weather event”.
Many videos from the rain-battered city are doing rounds on social media. Now a time-lapse video that shows Dubai’s sky turning green is going viral. The video shows how the grey sky turns into hazy green just as the rainstorm intensifies. This ominous-looking video appears to be straight out of a sci-fi film. An X user shared the video on April 17 and wrote “Sky turns green In Dubai! Actual footage from the storm in Dubai today.” The 23-second video has raked in over one lakh views.

Many people also commented how the green sky often indicates an approaching tornado or thunderstorm. An X user observed, “That’s supercell, tornado color. I’ve seen it in the deserts of southwestern United States.”

Another person wrote, “Green sky isn’t good. Usually it means large hail, high winds, and tornadoes where I live here in tornado valley.”

Back in July 2022, the sky in South Dakota, US, turned bright green before severe storms hit Sioux Falls city. The Sioux Falls region saw more than three inches of rain and heavy winds brought by a thunderstorm.

The sky turns green during thunderstorms or a rainstorm due to a phenomenon called virescence. Virescence occurs when the blue light-reflecting water droplets present in the rain clouds merge with the reddish light of the dawn or dusk sky. Research meteorologist Scott Bachmeier of the University of Wisconsin-Madison told EarthSky that virescence “only occurs if the cloud is very deep, which generally only occurs in thunderstorm clouds or those are the kind of storms that may produce hail and tornadoes.” It is important to note that the sky does not always turn green for tornadoes to form.
