Travel Influencer Tries Chicken Biryani On 'India's Cheapest Train' And He Thinks It's Not Bad
Pinto, who was travelling in sleeper class, bought a plate of chicken biryani for Rs 130.

A video of a foreign traveller having chicken biryani from an Indian Railway catering service is raking in likes on Instagram. The video shows traveller Daniel Pinto taking a 30-hour train journey in the sleeper coach and trying out chicken biryani. The dish cost him Rs 130, which he said was the equivalent of 1.5 euros. While eating the biryani on the upper berth of the train, Pinto said that it was not the best biryani he has ever had but added that it was satisfactory for train food and the price. This video was reshared on Instagram by a popular account on March 5. It was captioned, “Would you try this?” So far the clip has gathered over 9,000 likes.

In the comments, many people mentioned that foreigners, who might not have the natural immunity of living in Southeast Asian countries may not respond well to street food or food prepared on the trains. Making this point, an Instagram user wrote, “Biryani is amazing but overnight train Biryani requires a leap of faith if you don’t have a local immune system.” Another person said, “Being an Indian I can say that I would never dare to eat that food.”

Expressing a much optimistic sentiment, an Instagram user noted, “The thing is IRCTC serves the quality foods inside the train. These blue shirt men are IRCTC men and the foods are cooked in the train pantry. I really love travelling via train because you can shop and you can eat as per your needs. These compartments are AC, they provide a clean blanket and Pillow each time a passenger gets on.”

Another individual suggested, “People from outside India: he booked the cheapest ticket on a slow train that stops at every small station. There are much better options in faster and cleaner trains as well. But we don’t mind this type of travel depending on requirements, it’s not that bad.”

In January this year, a shocking video emerged from a Vande Bharat train in which passengers were seen returning their untouched food trays back after they complained that the food smelled stale.

An X user, Akash Keshari, shared the incriminating video. He mentioned that the food was of poor quality and demanded a refund. He also urged the authorities to take action against the catering company that was tasked with serving train meals. Keshari tagged the official accounts of Indian Railways, Vande Bharat Express and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
