“What better place to propose than the Melbourne Cricket Ground?" read the caption along with the proposal video.

Whether it is hosting a franchise tournament or an international outing, the Melbourne Cricket Ground never stays silent. The electric atmosphere at the venue well and truly underlines the love and passion for cricket among Australians. A few days ago when a Boxing Day Test between Australia and Pakistan was held at the MCG, the home crowd stole the show with several entertaining activities. On Tuesday when a Big Bash League (BBL) match was going on there, a cute moment transpired in the stands of the MCG as a man couldn’t find a better place than the historic stadium to convey his love for his girlfriend.

The couple marked their presence at the MCG to watch the BBL derby between Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades. When the second-innings chase was underway, the Indian-origin fan, recognised as Nitish, featured in a random interview with Channel 7’s commentator Jason Richardson during a break between overs. As the broadcaster’s camera was focused on their conversation, Nitish suddenly took out a ring from his pocket and went down to his knees to propose to his lady love.

At the start of the interview, Richardson asked Nitish about the tension in their relationship as he and his girlfriend support different teams. After joking about their rivalry, the man revealed that both of them are a huge admirer of Glenn Maxwell, who serves as the captain of the Melbourne Stars in this BBL.

Richardson was perhaps not ready for the proposal as he was left quite shocked. After the girl nodded to say “yes”, the other fans in the stands went on to cheer for the couple. A clip of the interview was dropped on the official X account of Channel 7, with a caption reading, “What better place to propose than the MCG? Congratulations to this lovely couple.”

Nitish’s decision to attend the Melbourne Derby certainly paid off as his favourite cricketer Glenn Maxwell was the star performer of the match. It turned out to be a 14-over clash after rain played a spoilsport at the MCG during the BBL game. Maxwell picked one wicket during the first innings where the Melbourne Renegades produced 97 runs. Coming in to chase, the Australian all-rounder smashed an unbeaten 32 off 15 balls, helping the Stars reach the target in 12 overs. With 4 victories in seven matches, Maxwell’s side is currently third in the BBL points table.
