You Won't Believe What Ex-Google MD's Garmin Watch Recorded After He Consumed One Peg of Gin
The former Google MD shared on X (formerly Twitter) what his Garmin watch recorded after he consumed just one peg of gin.

Parminder Singh, who served as the Managing Director for tech giant Google and microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter), shared how alcohol consumption affects sleep quality, even for social drinkers. Singh shared an experience where his Garmin watch recorded a decline in sleep quality after consuming just one peg of gin.

“I had a single gin-tonic at a friend’s place last evening. Today my watch informed me that my sleep was ‘non-restorative’. The pattern’s unmistakable – even a small quantity of alcohol affects sleep quality, irrespective of the duration. Even if you are only a social drinker like me, it’s important to be aware of this and factor it in,” wrote Singh in a post on X.

He also highlighted the stark difference in Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep data between when he consumed a small amount of alcohol and when he abstained.

Singh asserted, “Alcohol destroys REM sleep. REM is when emotional experiences are processed and memories are consolidated. On the left is my REM data (18m) with a single gin-tonic on Sunday, on the right is REM (1hr, 4m) today. Alcohol may help people fall asleep, but the quality gets unmistakably compromised,” while sharing screenshots of his sleep score to substantiate his claims.

“To be clear I’m not turning into a teetotaller. My post is advocating awareness. We ingest many harmful things. Any amount of sugar’s bad. Our diets have excessive carbs. People may choose to drink for social benefits or for many other reasons. As long as it’s an informed choice,” he further said.

The post expectedly received a lot of traction on social media, with one saying, “I think quality of sleep is affected by tea/coffee as well, among other things. Alcohol used to put me to sleep like a brick, a rare beer or glass of wine doesn’t make a difference to me.”

“That’s why you should have at least 3 stuff drinks. You’ll hit REM in the first hour. Works for me,” claimed another X user. To this, Singh replied, “Haha! As far as I know, you cannot hit REM in the first 90 minutes. The exception is if you are suffering from narcolepsy!”

A third said, “Either we don’t consume stuff or we shouldn’t be worried. Moreover, with all this information we can’t even drink water without being concerned. So, personal practice: workout, eat clean, and most importantly- take care of stress levels.”

“Garmin is pretty accurate in detecting this. It’s a pattern that accurately predicts every time there is a little alcohol in the body. Can’t go wrong. REM sleep is affected the most by alcohol. Pretty revealing for me. And now I’m afraid of drinking because I know what it’ll do to my sleep,” expressed a fourth.
