UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Tuesday met with an embarrassing moment when he called for the return of ‘sausages’ in a slip of the tongue while referring to the release of Israeli hostages from Hamas captivity in Gaza.
The UK PM, however, recovered from his slip-up immediately by correcting ‘sausages’ with ‘hostages’ while addressing the Labour Party’s annual conference in Liverpool. A video of Starmer making the ‘sausages’ gaffe surfaced on social media.
“I call again for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the return of the sausages – the hostages – and a recommitment to the two-state solution: recognised Palestinian state alongside a safe and secure Israel,” Starmer said as he corrected himself.

The context of the mistake came as Starmer stressed escalating tensions in the Middle East during the past week. He touched upon the triggering warfare between Israel and the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah and called for restraint.
“I call again for restraint and de-escalation at the border between Lebanon and Israel. I call again for all parties to step back from the brink. I call again for all parties to step back from the brink,” he said.
It also comes after Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized UK Starmer-led UK government for mixed signals and “misguided actions” in an interview with the Daily Mail. “After the October 7 Hamas massacre, the previous British government was clear in its support. Unfortunately, the current government is sending mixed messages,” Netanyahu said.
Starmer occupied the UK Prime Ministerial position in July this year as the Labour Party secured a thumping victory after 14 years of Conservative rule in the country.
As seen in the past, the Starmer government has repeatedly urged a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict, speeding up the deliveries of humanitarian aid to Gaza and the release of hostages by Palestinian militant group Hamas during its widened assault on Israel on October 7, 2023.
Israel claimed that some 1,200 civilians were killed and over 200 people were taken hostage when Hamas launched a ground offensive. In retaliation, the Jewish nation launched a brutal offensive in Gaza, which has claimed over 41,000 lives so far, according to the Hamas-run Palestinian health ministry in Gaza.
