All eyes will be on Virat Kohli when he walks out to bat against Australia in front of 1,30,000 spectators at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday. The former India skipper recently rewrote history, shattering Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record for most hundreds in ODI cricket. The master blaster retired with 49 hundreds to his credit and Kohli went past his tally in the semi-final against New Zealand earlier this week. Also, the latter is currently the leading run-scorer of the ongoing tournament with 711 runs in 10 innings.

The century against New Zealand was Kohli’s third ton of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, having scored centuries against Bangladesh and South Africa in earlier stages of the tournament. His ton against Bangladesh came in a successful chase in Pune. His second century helped set up the foundation of a match-winning total against the Proteas at Eden Gardens. Overall, this was Kohli’s fifth ton in the Cricket World Cup.
Kohli scored 117 off 113 in the semi-final against New Zealand. Speaking with the broadcasters, the former Indian skipper said it was a great feeling scoring the 50th ODI hundred with his wife, Anushka Sharma, and childhood idol, Tendulkar, watching him from the stands.
“Difficult to explain this. If I could paint a perfect picture I would want this to be the picture. My life partner, the person I love the most is sitting there, my hero is sitting there and I was able to get the 50th (ODI hundred) in front of all of them and all these stands in Wankhede as well, such a history venue so it was amazing,” Kohli told the broadcasters.
