Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the Concept IAA (Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile) at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. The car can automatically switch to aerodynamic mode when it hits 80kmph and when this happens, the shape of the car is altered to improve its aerodynamics.

The aerodynamic mode can also be activated by use of a button. The designers of the Concept IAA have used algorithmic design methods to develop this car along with several CPU hours to perfect its aerodynamic capabilities.

When activated, the Concept IAA’s overall length is increased by 390mm through the extension of eight segments at the tail end. The front flaps on the bumper extend 25mm forward and 20mm backward to improve the airflow around the front end and the front wheel arches.

The Active Rims alter their cupping to zero from 55mm. Finally, the louvre in the front bumper moves back 60mm to improve the underbody airflow. The Concept IAA boasts a Cd (drag coefficient) value of 0.19.

“Fascinating and technically sophisticated cars form the core of Mercedes-Benz. The Concept IAA applies intelligent innovations to resolve the conflicting aims of functionality and aesthetics and shows that we still have plenty of ideas on how to achieve further improvements in efficiency,” says Professor Dr Thomas Weber who is a member in Daimler board of management.
