B'lore to redesign airport for efficiency
The proposed Bangalore airport is being redesigned. Apart from a face-lift, it will also ensure efficient travel.

New Delhi: The new Bangalore International Airport will come up 35 km from the city. The construction work is on in full swing and the airport is expected to be ready by 2008.

When it is ready, the airport is expected to make traveling more passenger friendly.

Bangalore International Airports Limited (BIAL) officials say the airport will be able to handle 11 million people a year.

Even so, passengers might find it tough to get to the airport, the National Highways Authority of India is building a six-lane road from the city to the airport.

But it would take atleast an hour to get to the airport on this road half as long as it takes fly between Bangalore and Mumbai.

So, BIAL has proposed a dedicated rail link between the city and the airport. This would cut commuting time but the rail link awaits official approval.

"It's not part of our initial phase but I really hope the Karnataka government takes it up and reserves the land in order to build the rail link," said Albert Brunner, CEO at Bangalore International Airport Ltd.

The redesigned airport will open its doors and runway by April 2008. BIAL is sure it will meet the deadline. But it might take more than a large modern airport to make traveling quick and easy.
