Govt approves 15 more SEZs
For the first time the board of approvals meets after the freeze on any fresh SEZ notifications was lifted by EGoM.

New Delhi: The Department of Commerce has stepped on the gas to clear proposals for SEZs.

In its meeting chaired by Commerce Secretary Gopal K Pillai on Wednesday the board of approvals has cleared 15 out of 23 SEZs.

This includes Vedanta, DLF and Unitech SEZs.

The board has deferred its decision RIL's Navi Mumbai SEZ due to some land issues.

The other three meetings are scheduled on May 31, June 5 and June 22.

This is the first time the board of approvals is meeting after the freeze on any fresh SEZ notifications was lifted by an EGoM.

On April 5, the group of ministers (GoM) lifted the freeze and cleared 83 special economic zones for notification.

However at that time it was decided that SEZs cannot be more than 5,000 hectares. Though, state governments can reduce this cap if they wish.

In an attempt to prevent a repeat of the Nandigram fiasco, the Centre also decided that state governments cannot buy land for companies.

On January 22, the EGoM had put a freeze on fresh approvals and notification of SEZs.
