Mumbai: It was a quiet day for markets as they were seen consolidating at the higher level after Wednesday's phenomenal rally. But the party continued for realty and sugar stocks. Other rate sensitives like auto and financials also saw buying interest. BSE Realty index surged nearly 7 per cent.
Metal, capital goods and oil & gas stocks did well in Thursday's trade. However with rupee breaching the 40 mark IT stocks took in on their chin. Rupee climbed beyond 40 per dollar for the first time since May 14, 1998.
Sensex was up 25.20 points or 0.15 per cent at 16347.95, and the Nifty up 15.20 points or 0.32 per cent at 4747.55. About 1323 shares have advanced, 1646 shares declined, and 62 shares are unchanged.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 7,132.71 up 16 points or 0.20 per cent. The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 8,876.07 up 5 points or 0.05 per cent.
The BSE Capital Goods Index was closed at 14,392.46 up 2 per cent. Reliance Infra, Praj Industries, Bharat Bijlee, Siemens, Larsen, Greaves Cotton closed lower.
The BSE Auto Index closed closed at 5,136.85 up 0.8 per cent. Mah and Mah, Bharat Forge, TVS Motor, Escorts, Hind Motors ended in the green.
The BSE Metal Index closed at 12,723.31 up 1.4 per cent. Jindal Steel, Sesa Goa, Sterlite Ind, Shree Precoated, Jindal Saw advanced.
The BSE FMCG Index gained 1.2 per cent at 2,165.71. ITC, Britannia, Bata India, Colgate ended in red. BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 9,019.56 up 1.07 per cent. Reliance Natura, HPCL, Petronet LNG, BPCL, Reliance Petro closed in green.
The BSE IT Index closed at 4,390.75 down 2 per cent. Tech Mahindra, Wipro, Infosys, TCS, Patni, Satyam, Patni Computer closed lower.
The BSE Bankex closed flat at 8,688.68. Centurion Bank, Axis Bank, Karnataka Bank, Kotak Mahindra closed higher. Ralty index was up 7 per cent. Top gainers on the index were Unitech, Indiabulls Real, DLF, Sobha Developer, Mahindra Gesco were among the top gainers.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 14750.14 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 58327.40 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 7195.06 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 80272.60 crore.
