Sydney: Australian airline Qantas is set to transfer 300 Information Technology (IT) jobs to India.
A Qantas spokesperson said it was finalising a review of its IT development, maintenance and support services.
"The review has included a shortlisting of two outsource providers in India," she was quoted as saying on Sunday.
"The providers involved in the tender process have a capability and depth of expertise that we can no longer source in Australia," the spokesperson said.
In July the airline shortlisted two Indian companies, Tata Consulting Services and Satyam, to take over the work.
Tata has already signed a $ 3.85 million deal with the Victorian Government's Curriculum Assessment Authority.
Jobs at risk are in the airline's Internet operation that deals with holiday bookings, frequent-flyer programs, operational logistics, crew and engineering operations, financial and payroll systems.
The Australian Services Union (ASU) has opposed the proposal that will take jobs from at least 300 IT workers in Australia.
ASU said Qantas had already granted a contract to one of the Indian companies that allowed 30 of its workers to "scope out" work in the Mascot IT office.
Prime Minister John Howard, however, refused to enter into a debate over the proposed transfer of jobs, saying staff decisions are a matter for the employer.
"I don't think I can be in a position to give a running commentary on every single employment decision that's made by a company," he said.
A decision on the job cuts is expected to be made at a Qantas board meeting in about two weeks.
