New Delhi: If you want to make your son proud of you, pay your tax. This is the message the customs and central excise department had intended to convey to tax evaders.
But the central excise advertisement has run into trouble even before the advertisement has been properly aired. The Vaish community says the advertisement is targeted at them.
"We object to the word Gupta, they can say Shyam uncle, why target us?" Pradeep Mittal, spokesman for the community, said.
The authorities say the advertisement has been aired on at least 6 news channels and published in several newspapers.
So far, this is the first protest they have come across. The excise advertisement has said that they are willing to make amends.
"The intention is not to hurt, we will change it in the next release," Commissioner, Directorate of Publicity & Public Relations, D D Rishi said.
The advertisement was cleared by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry. It is part of an aggressive campaign launched by the tax department to surpass the Rs 17,500 crore target this financial year.
The idea behind the advertisement was to make tax evaders feel guilty. While the guilt part is still debatable, the advertisement has brought the tax department some completely unwanted publicity.
