Hamied created a stir in pharma industry when he slashed the prices of three important cancer drugs by 75 per cent.

New Delhi: Yusuf Hamied, chairman of Indian pharmaceutical giant Cipla, has won the Indian of the Year 2012 award in the business category. Hamied, who is a leading Indian scientist, created a stir in pharmaceuticals industry when he slashed the prices of three important cancer drugs by 75 per cent.

Hamied was up against Chanda Kochhar of ICICI, who is the first woman to lead India's second-largest lender and N Chandrasekaran of TCS who spearheaded the growth of India's largest software company.

Other nominees in the category were Nitin Paranjpe of Hindustan Unilever Ltd who is the youngest chief executive of the consumer product giant's India operations, Rahul Bhatia of Indigo who created a storm in the skies that are virtually dominated by bigger airlines and Rajiv Bajaj of Bajaj Auto who revived the maker of two wheelers to stand up on its feet again.
