The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 has had some unimaginable totals, breaking unexpected 10-year-old records, with the batters certainly taking on the bowlers to put up jaw-dropping totals.
We have seen RCB’s 263 (from 2013) surpassed, the most number of sixes in a season, most centuries, most 200+ scores and a lot more that flew below the radar.
Meanwhile, Former Australian and a pace pioneer of sorts, Brett Lee has come out in support of his tribe. The speedster said that the T20 format is entertaining, but it’s becoming hard for bowlers.
“I am all for sixes and batters getting out there and smoking balls all over the field. But there’s gotta be something in it for the bowlers too,” Brett Lee said at the launch of Legends Intercontinental T20 League.
“We’ve seen scores now from 265 to 270 to 277. It’s really hard because most bowlers now go for 45 to 50 runs off four overs. So do we accept that bowlers are now happy with nine to 10 runs per over,” he added.
‘Bowl more yorkers’
The former Aussie cricketer went ahead to give some tips to his successors opining on the use of yorkers, especially in the death overs.
“Get your ego, put your code in the safe, leave it at the hotel. Because as a fast bowler, as a spinner, as a medium-paced bowler, you are going to get hit for sixes. That’s T20 cricket. But you’ve got to just try and limit that damage,” he said.
“I want to see fast bowlers bowl more yorkers. I still don’t reckon they execute enough yorkers at the death.”
Lee further explained how the field placements too play an important role for any bowler because of the batters’ innovations.
“If you look back at the 17 years of IPL on average a yorker goes for a strike rate less than a hundred which tells me that one run or less per ball that’s executed. Now when you bowl the yorker and you got guys who can go down and scoop you over their head (like Dilshan). That puts pressure on you as a bowler, you have to set the right field to put two men back, third main, front, and back,” he said.
‘Free Throw for the bowlers’
While Lee has some valuable suggestions for the bowlers who have been at the receiving end in the recent past, the right-hander pulled a hilarious innovation out of his sleeves in the bowlers’ favour.
“I’m happy if we can do something like the free hit. The batter gets a free hit, right? So maybe if the batter misses two balls in a row, the bowler gets to have a free throw at the stumps, wherein the batter just has to stand with his hands up,” Lee suggested as the conference burst into laughter.
