Around eight students of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay have been levied a fine of Rs 1.2 lakh for participating in a play titled “Raahovan” during the Performing Arts Festival held at the institute on March 31 this year, reported Times of India. Following complaints that the play showed the main characters in a bad light and made a mockery of Hindu culture, the IIT set up a disciplinary committee to address the complaints regarding the play. The report further stated that graduating students have been fined up to Rs 1.2 lakh and junior students have been fined Rs 40,000.
Loosely based on the Ramayana, the play sparked protests from a section of students who alleged it was disrespectful to Lord Ram and Sita. The penalty notice was uploaded on the microblogging site X by ‘IIT B for Bharat’. The group also posted that “two different punishments were executed, one for the students who are passing this July and another for the regular students.” It also asked the IIT to “establish guidelines to ensure that no religion is ridiculed under the guise of freedom of expression on the campus in any form.”
