What started as a complaint has turned into a meme as these issues gather popularity on social media, bringing attention to the harsh realities of living in certain hostels at IIT Bombay

In the realm of Indian education, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) stand as beacons of excellence, with IIT Bombay being an aspirational hub for countless science enthusiasts to pursue their B.Tech degrees. However, recent snippets about the deplorable and dilapidated living conditions in the IIT Bombay Hostel have cast a shadow on the institution’s hostels.

The students at IIT Bombay, driven by their pursuit of knowledge and success, find themselves grappling not only with academic challenges but also with substandard living conditions.

What started as a complaint has turned into a meme as these issues gather popularity on social media, bringing attention to the harsh realities of living in certain hostels at IIT Bombay. The irony is glaring – an institution that prides itself on producing the nation’s top engineers is failing to provide a basic standard of living for its students.

A barrage of complaints from students has flooded social media platforms, shedding light on the lamentable state of affairs within the hostel walls. One such post that has gained traction on social media has garnered nearly 1 million views showing the condition of a hostel room in IIT Bombay with a text overlay that reads, “IIT Bombay students are cream of the nation. They must be living in pristine rooms.IIT Bombay Hostel:.” The post’s caption, “Moye Moye,” alluded to the recent social media trend and effectively captured the feelings of dissatisfaction that students could have been experiencing in those hostel rooms.

The worn-out, flaking wall paint that has become yellow indicates poor upkeep and a long time since the last paint job. The outdated electrical fittings and plug points suggest that the room has not been upgraded or renovated in a long time and needs one to address both aesthetic and safety concerns. The overall condition, along with the cramped space suggests a less than favourable living environment that students are experiencing.

It’s more than just the discomfort of confined accommodations or non-functional amenities. It concerns the compromises that are made by the students’ general well-being and mental health. In a space that should foster growth, innovation, and collaboration, the prevailing conditions at IIT Bombay hostel are a stark contradiction to the institution’s lofty ideals.

Three of IIT Bombay’s seventeen hostels—H-7, H-8, and the former wings of H-4—are reportedly no longer available as a result of structural safety concerns that required their demolition.

In June last year, a report by Free Press Journal highlighted several distressing issues plaguing the IIT Bombay hostel, bringing into question the quality of life offered. Cramped living spaces have become a norm rather than an exception here. Non-functional washing machines have added to the students’ misery, forcing them to grapple with basic amenities that are essential for their well-being.

The Times of India, in another report, drew attention to the unhygienic conditions prevailing in the hostel mess and kitchen areas. Students have raised concerns about the presence of rats in the kitchen and worms and metal pieces in the food highlighting an unsanitary environment hampering the nourishment of the students.
