Enrollment of Students in Computer Engineering Increased by 38% in Last Three Years: AISHE
The AISHE report revealed the top five branches of engineering -- Computer Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Electrical Engineering respectively

According to the latest report of the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) released by the Ministry of Education on Thursday night, there is a huge craze for computer engineering among students. The enrollment of students in computer engineering has increased by about 38 per cent in the last three years. The number of people taking admission to computer engineering was 9.3 lakh in 2019-20. It has now increased to 12 lakh in 2021-22.

The report further revealed the top five branches of engineering — Computer Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Electrical Engineering respectively. According to the data, among the top five branches of engineering, only Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering have seen an increase of 38.82 per cent and 1.44 per cent in enrollment respectively. Apart from this, branches like Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, and Civil Engineering saw a decline of 15.45 per cent, 0.81 per cent, and 3.31 per cent respectively.

In the year 2021-22, the maximum number of enrollments in Computer Engineering was 12.9 lakh. This was followed by Electronics Engineering with 6 lakh enrollments. Apart from this, there were 5.74 lakh enrollments in Mechanical Engineering, 4.64 lakh in Civil Engineering and 3.75 in Electrical Engineering.

In the Science stream, a total of 57,18,185 students enrolled in UG, PG, MPhil, and PhD in Science of which 52.1 per cent are women. Of the 49,18,425 enrollments at UG level, 50.8 per cent were women. Whereas at the PG level, out of 7,52,807 nominations, 61.2 per cent were women. There were 45,324 enrollments in science at the PhD level, out of which more than 50 per cent were women.

The report also stated that at the postgraduate level, the maximum number of students are enrolled in the Social Science stream (10.8 lakhs of which 56.6 per cent are female) followed by Science and Management. The total number of students enrolled in the Science discipline is 7.5 lakh (out of which 61.2 per cent are female students). The total enrolment in the Management stream is 7.3 lakh (of which 41.9 per cent are female).
