Helicopter Carrying Kedarnath Pilgrims Loses Control, Makes Emergency Landing:
A helicopter carrying seven persons, including pilgrims, made an emergency landing in Uttarakhand’s Kedarnath on May 24 due to a technical snag. According to an official, the aircraft landed a few metres from the helipad at the Himalayan Temple. It was carrying seven passengers, including six pilgrims and the pilot. Everyone is safe, the official stated. As per Rudraprayag District Magistrate Saurabh Gaharwar, the helicopter took off from the Sirsi helipad for Kedarnath early on Friday morning. It experienced a technical fault in its back motor, causing the pilot to make an emergency landing a few metres from the Kedarnath helipad, he said, citing preliminary findings.
Several Delhi University Colleges Receive Bomb Threats:
On May 23, more than a dozen colleges, including Delhi University’s Lady Shri Ram College, Hansraj College and Ramjas College, received bomb threats via email, according to officials. At 4:38 pm, calls were received reporting bomb threats at Lady Shri Ram College and Sri Venkateswara College. Firefighters and Delhi police immediately reached the spot, according to a statement from the Delhi Fire Service. The local police, a bomb disposal squad and a bomb detection team arrived at the LSR College, along with a dog squad and conducted searches, but nothing suspicious was discovered, the official added.
Pune Porsche Crash:
On May 22, the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) revoked the bail order of the 17-year-old Pune teen who was involved in the accident of two motorbike-riding techies in Kalyani Nagar last Sunday. He has been taken to an observation home until June 5. The accused’s parents can meet with him twice a week for an hour. Police argued for the 17-year-old driver’s remand in front of the Juvenile Justice Board, claiming that he was not safe outside and could be attacked. The cops also stated that people would be secure if he was inside the detention home. Prashant Patil, the accused’s lawyer, told the JJB that the boy was depressed, which led to his drinking habits.
SC Refuses to Issue EC Direction to Upload Voter Turnout Data:
The Supreme Court on May 24 denied an NGO’s request that the Election Commission issue directives to release polling station-specific voter turnout data on its website during the Lok Sabha elections. The apex court cited the poll panel’s inability to mobilise staff. A vacation bench comprising Justices Dipankar Datta and Satish Chandra Sharma stated that it cannot make such orders at this time because five phases of polling have concluded while two are remaining. The bench stated that the poll panel will have difficulty mobilising manpower to submit voter turnout statistics on its website.
Severe Cyclone Forming in the Bay of Bengal:
A depression in the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm and make landfall along the adjoining shores of West Bengal and Bangladesh around May 26 midnight, bringing heavy rain to the state’s coastal districts and north Odisha, according to the Met department on May 24. This is the first cyclone in the Bay of Bengal this pre-monsoon season and it will be named Remal by Oman, as per the north Indian Ocean region’s cyclone naming system. On Sunday, the cyclone could reach winds of 120 km per hour.
