Kajal Aggarwal Admits She ‘Didn’t Expect' Singham to Become 'So Big’: 'Rohit Went On To...' | Exclusive
Kajal Aggarwal says her 'multi-crore' debut film Singham opened doors for her like never before, shooting her to pan-Indian fame.

The trend of re-releasing older films continues and the latest to join this bandwagon is Rohit Shetty’s Singham starring Ajay Devgn and Kajal Aggarwal Kitchlu. At the special screening of the film on Saturday (October 19), Ajay and Rohit met fans amid promotions of Singham Again, the third instalment in the franchise. Singham introduced audiences to Bajirao Singham, one of Bollywood’s most loved onscreen cops, and was the first film in Rohit’s cop universe. It also marked Kajal’s Bollywood debut.

Now, in an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, Kajal says that she’s ‘really happy’ that audiences will get to revisit her maiden Bollywood project, which emerged as one of the biggest hits of 2011. “Singham is definitely special. It’s one of the films that set a trend. It enjoys a very loyal fan base. Rohit went on to make so many other sequels to the film and it became a franchise. I’m very happy it became such a big deal and that its loyal fan base is excited and looking forward to watching it,” she tells us.

Even after all these years, Ajay’s ‘ata majhi satakli’ dialogue and the love ballad Saathiya that captured the chemistry between him and Kajal are etched in the memories of fans, thanks to satellite television and social media. “People still want to watch it, over and over again. In fact, there are so many of them who come up to me and tell me that every time it’s on TV, they view and enjoy it. They, particularly, enjoy the action and the humour, which is something that Rohit is known for,” says Kajal.

Before working on Singham, she worked extensively in Tamil and Telugu cinema. But it was this actioner that propelled her to pan-Indian prominence. Talking about it, she shares, “I started my career with regional cinema. I’ve been lucky that I got to do some fabulous films and work with the best of people. It was amazing and I did get a lot of global recognition through my regional films. But doing Singham truly brought upon me the spotlight and made me a national name.”

It also marked the beginning of a new chapter for her. “I’m grateful to have been a part of a film like this. Doors automatically open when you do a multi-crore, big-ticket film. That’s a natural phenomenon. So, yes, I did get quite a few offers post-Singham. It was a defining film for me in terms of my career and brand. I do feel that it was a milestone film,” says the actor, who’s currently shooting for Salman Khan’s Sikandar.

According to Kajal, Singham clicked for not resorting to crudity despite being a massy entertainer. “It’s truly entertaining without having any derogatory remarks or unnecessary humour. It was a genuinely funny film. It’s a cop story about how he fights for justice and these are stories we all enjoy watching very much. I definitely knew that I was a part of something special but I didn’t expect it to become so big,” she says.
