Singer Meba Ofilia made her Lollapalooza India debut recently. The Meghalaya-based rapper performed on the first day of the music event, doubling up as one of the BUDX Uncovered acts of this year. Following her performance, Meba sat down for a chat with News18 Showsha and said she believes she manifested her Lollapalooza India debut. “Performing at Lollapalooza India 2024 is a dream come true. Ever since the first edition came to India, I was hoping I would get the chance to perform at Lollapalooza – I guess I manifested it!” she said.
“Add to this the fact that I get to perform on the BudX stage, which features acts from some of the biggest names in music- from Sting to Anoushka Shankar and the Jonas Brothers, it’s surreal!” Meba added. Speaking about collaborating with Budweiser, Meba expressed her gratitude towards the brand for recognising artists and giving them a platform at events such as Lollapalooza India.
“My team was contacted by Budweiser, and I was asked to be one of the ‘BudX Uncovered’ acts at Lollapalooza India 2024. I was intrigued by the proposition, and when I came to understand that the initiative is geared towards providing artists like me a global stage to perform on, I couldn’t say no! I’m appreciative of the fact that Budweiser has recognized the need to provide artists the opportunity to demonstrate their talent and conviction in their art. Moreover, what drew me to the initiative was finding common ground with the brand in our shared commitment to pushing creative boundaries,” she said.
“I was extremely pumped when we locked things in with Budweiser! I could not wait to share the music I was working on and the set I was prepping with my band over the past few months for Lollapalooza India 2024,” Meba shared.
Meba’s journey into music was somewhat like Ved’s journey in Tamasha. The singer was preparing to be a lawyer before she took the plunge into music. Speaking about the comparison, Meba said, “I am glad to know that people can draw similar stories of my music career to those of other personalities. It is a similar experience we all share as humans I guess when it comes to following one’s heart and passion. Winning the MTV EMAs for Best India Act was the driving force for me to take this step. There was no turning back from there even though the journey was difficult and uncertain. Sometimes I do feel like the path I chose has to pay off because of this decision but at the same time, I am aware that nothing is promised in life.”
Looking back on her journey from dropping out of law school to standing on the Lollapalooza India stage, Meba said that her toughest point of her career so far has been ‘trying to stay consistent with music.’ “Constantly trying to seek inspiration. It is a bummer when it starts to feel like a chore. I have to constantly remind myself that this is just part of the journey and with each journey one takes, there will always be ebbs and flows to it,” she said.
While Meba has opened a new door for herself courtesy the music concert, she has always carried the responsibility of representing Meghalaya and Northeastern states at national and international events. Ask her if she feels the pressure of the responsibility, Meba admitted, “I truly do feel the pressure from time to time with the way I carry myself and my music. It can get overwhelming if I am honest. That said, I put my best foot forward with every opportunity that comes my way while simultaneously learning how to navigate societal pressures.”
On a concluding note, Meba said she’s manifesting a special collaboration with British singer-songwriter Joy Crookes. “(I hope to collaborate with) Joy Crookes. I am not even hesitant about it!” she said on a concluding note.
