A few years into her career as an actor, Sara Ali Khan has become synonymous as a ‘middle class’ girl. She has often called herself the ‘most kanjoos celebrity ever’ and her middle class relationship with money with often makes her the subject of many meme fests. While her honesty about leading a frugal lifestyle has made her stand from the crowd, many on social media have also trolled her for trying too hard to push this image.
Sara, who is gearing up for the release of her upcoming patriotic film, Ae Watan Mere Watan, recently spoke to News18 Showsha, where she shared that though she has made people realise that she’s a funny, bubby and regular girl, ‘crutches’ like this won’t help her promote the film. “As an actor, this is a genre I’ve never done. So now, I don’t have the crutch of being the ‘namaste darshakon’ girl, the ‘knock knock’ joke girl, the girl with the abs or the bubbly and bindass girl who will just speak her mind. My sasti juttis isn’t going to help here,” she said with her signature candour.
Sara has become the darling of the paparazzi over the years due to her relatable shenanigans and her frank demeanour has earned the adoration of many fans. But for Ae Watan Mere Watan, she had to channel a different streak. While talking about the same, she revealed that there’s an introverted side to her that people don’t see and often the ‘fun girl Sara’ takes a precedence over it.
“There was a totally different level of self-confidence, self-belief and almost saatvik positivity that I had to bring to the table, which anyway is a part of my personality. But people don’t see that. I also meditate. They’ll only see me rhyming but not that. So, yes, I had to bring that onscreen for the first time, which is superb,” she stated.
However, being a part of a story like Ae Watan Mere Watan that’s inspired from true events brought her a sense of pride. When quizzed about the same, she said, “It did, a 150 percent on every level! As a human being, I’m proud to be able to tell a story of an integral part of the Quit India Movement. I realise that I can’t always change the world. It’s about whatever little I can do. In this day and age, people are reluctant to do absolutely anything because they feel like, ‘Arrey, hum kya hi kar lenge!’ But kuch toh kar lo. Boond boond se banta hai sagar. That’s the whole point.”
With the film and her part as a young freedom fighter, she also intends young girls to be the wind beneath their own wings. “As a woman today in our country, I also hope to inspire women to be strong and have the self-belief to go out there and actualise their dreams. In that process, I’ve inspired myself,” she remarked.
Ae Watan Mere Watan is all set to premiere on Prime Video on March 21.
