London: Swansea got their Premier League point against Wigan at the Liberty Stadium as Ben Watson missed a penalty for the visitors.

The midfielder saw his 73rd minute spot-kick saved by Michel Vorm in the Swans goal as both teams spurned chances to take all three points and grab their first win of the season.

The hosts took the game to the Latics with the crowd roaring them on and they could have taken the lead in the second minute when the visitors failed to clear a Nathan Dyer cross which fell invitingly to Danny Graham but his effort was well saved by Ali Al-Habsi.

Brendan Rodgers' side had settled into the game better than their opponents and Scott Sinclair had a great chance to break the deadlock, when he cut inside from the left wing but his shot was tame and wide of the post.

The Swans were dominating the game but were spurning glorious chances with Graham being particularly wasteful as he again headed Angel Rangel’s cross wide after being left alone in the area by the Latics defenders.

Wigan were reduced to playing on the counter but couldn’t get anything going in the final third of the pitch with Victor Moses and Franco Di Santo failing to see much of the ball as the home side dominated possession.

The hosts were cranking up the pressure and a flowing move down the left nearly broke the stalemate but Wayne Routledge’s ball across the six-yard box was intercepted by Antolin Alcaraz before Graham could pounce for a tap-in.

Roberto Martinez’s side came into the game more as the half drew on as Jordi Gomez had an effort from the left as escaped the attentions of Rangel but he couldn’t beat Michel Vorm in the Swansea goal.

In the second half the Swans continued to dominate the game but couldn’t find the elusive goal as good chances went begging as somehow Sinclair and Graham failed to knock the loose ball into the net after a shot from Rangel meandered in the box following a great move by the home side.

The home-side were beginning to up the ante and yet again went close this time through Routledge as he jinked past Emmerson Boyce and fired a shot at goal which went inches past the post with Al-Habsi beaten.

After a quiet start Wigan began to click into gear after the hour mark and were unlucky not to take the lead when Gomez’s left-volley hit the woodwork after he beat out Steven Caulker and Ashley Williams to the ball.

This spurred the Latics on and Moses could have given them the lead when he dribbled past Rangel and Caulker but his effort clattered the cross-bar and before Gomez could tap-in a rebound effort he was fouled in the area by Williams.

Referee Phil Dowd pointed to the spot and Ben Watson who scored a penalty against Norwich last week saw his effort saved by Vorm as he dived low to his right to keep the score at 0-0.

Swansea were jolted back into life following their scare and sub Stephen Dobbie nearly found a way through Al-Habsi but he like many others before him was denied by the Latics keeper.

Both sides pressed for a winner late on with the visitors looking more likely to snatch the points as the hosts began to tire after dominating for most of the game.

However no one was able to break the deadlock as Swansea earned their first ever Premier League point in their first home game.
