Shillong: Shillong Lajong came from behind to earn full points as they registered an upset win over East Bengal 2-1 in the 20th round of I-League football at the Jawaharlal Nehru Sport Complex on Saturday.
East Bengal foreign recruit Tolgay Ozbey opened the scoring in the fourth minute before John Menyongar restored parity for the Shillong Lajong in 12th minute and Eugeneson Lyngdoh doubled the lead in 16th minute.
The tourists took an early lead when Ozbey dribbled past three defenders and beat custodian Soram Poirei Angamba to find the back of the net.
However, East Bengal's joy was shortlived, as Menyongar placed the deflected ball from the free kick taken by Mathew Osvaldo Mayora into the net to restore parity for the home side in the 12th minute.
Fans went into frenzy as they egged their team to take the lead. Buoyed by the crowd support and the equaliser, four minutes later Lyngdoh doubled the lead for the hosts from C Lallawmzuala's cross.
From this point onward, the hosts dominated the proceedings, keeping the tourists defence busy. The experienced Red and Gold brigade did come close to scoring an equaliser, but it was not their day as luck failed to oblige.
Shillong Lajong now have 27 points from 20 outings while East Bengal stay at 35 points from 20 matches.
