New Delhi: English Premier League giants Manchester United and Youth Football International (YFI) in association with Apollo Tyres launched the Apollo 'Go the Distance' scholarship programme in India on Monday under the banner of Manchester United Soccer School (MUSS) to nurture young football talent in India.

Former Man United defender Mikael Silvestre launched the scholarship programme at the American Embassy School in New Delhi on Monday afternoon. He was joined by Marco Paracciani, Chief Marketing Officer and Satish Sharma, President (Asian Pacific, Middle East and Africa), Apollo Tyres, and Phil Townsend, United's Director of Communication and Deputy Chairman of Man United Foundation.

The scholarship programme, which started on Monday, will continue till Friday this week. Two especially flown-in MUSS coaches, along with Silvestre, will show a range of movements and techniques linked to United coaching methods and then select 6 kids out of 192 participants based on their skills. The selected kids will be offered a one-year scholarship programme for their training with YFI in New Delhi.

From the chosen school kids, one kid would get an opportunity to join a week-long residential training camp with MUSS in the UK.

When asked about the same, Silvestre said, "Football is growing in India and Apollo and United will help them in future."

"The winner will be present at the Old Trafford for Arsenal's game on Sunday. I have played for both the clubs but Manchester United will be in my heart", Silvestre added.
