New Delhi: Manchester United have taken a six-point lead in the English Premier League, beating title contenders Arsenal 2-1 at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Arsenal played wonderful football in the first half, but just could not finish. The Gunners finally found the back of the net with Robin Van Persie's cross evading all the United defenders for Adebayor to score.
But minutes later, Arsenal captain William Gallas handled the ball inside his penalty box and Ronaldo stepped up to score his 28th goal of the season, the highest scorer in the league.
Owen Hargreaves then put United on top with a 25-yard free-kick that left Arsenal stranded.
This result effectively puts the Gunners out of the hunt for the Premiership title, and no-one will now bet against United's chances of holding on to that title.
Meanwhile, Liverpool slammed in three goals past Blackburn Rovers in another fixture to stay on the hunt for a place in next season's Champions League.
Liverpool had to wait till the 60th minute to open the score. Captain Steven Gerrard took on the entire Blackburn defence and made them look like ametuers.
But the Liverpool captain wasn't done yet. He sent a perfect curler into the box in the 82nd minute to Fernando Torres, who scored his 30th goal of the season.
Liverpool added a third in the 90th minute, with substitute Andriy Voronin sliding the ball home. Blackburn scored a consolation goal minutes after that, but it was too little, too late.
