Oscars 2024 Shortlists: Barbie Leads The Way; Malayalam Film 2018 Misses The Cut
Barbie had many striking mentions with five shortlists leading in the sound category, three entries in the original song section and the position in the original score category.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the shortlists for the 96th Academy Awards to be held in 2024. The Oscars Shortlists have named fifteen films in the International Feature Film, Documentary Feature, Original Song, and Music Score, as well as the documentary, animated, and live-action short-film categories. While ten films advanced in the categories of Sound, Visual Effects, and Makeup & Hairstyling. The Malayalam film 2018 which was expected to secure a place in the International features list fell short and did not make it to the shortlists. Not just this there were other surprises in the latest Oscar Shortlists.

The 2018 film based on the devastating floods in the state of Kerala did not qualify, a few notable titles advanced in the international features. The Zone of Interest (United Kingdom), Tran Anh Hung’s The Taste of Things (France), Lila Aviles Totem (Mexico) and Aki Kaurismaki’s Fallen Leaves (Finland). Unfortunately there are no entries from India.

Among other films, Barbie has made the cut and secured a lead position in several categories. Greta Gerwig’s Box Office hit had many striking mentions, with five shortlists leading in the sound category and three entries in the original song section for Billie Eilish What I Was Made For?, Dua Lipa’s Dance the Night and Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt’s I’m Just Ken. The film also secured a position in the original score category.

Apart from Barbie, compositions by Daniel Pemberton in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Ludwig Goransson in Oppenheimer, and the late Robbie Robertson for Killers of the Flower Moon are included in the music categories.

The original song category also included two songs from The Colour Purple which are Keep It Movin and Superpower, performed by Halle Bailey and Fantasia Barrino, numbers from Flora and Son (High Life and Meet in the Middle), Can’t Catch Me Now from The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. Others in the category are Lenny Kravitz’s Road to Freedom from Rustin, Wes Anderson, Dear Alien from Asteroid City.

The major miss for Barbie was in makeup and hairstyling. Along with Barbie, other expected films in the category missed the cut such as The Colour Purple, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Instead, Beau is Afraid and the horror thriller The Last Voyage of the Demeter were mentioned in the list.

Interestingly, there were certain surprises in this year’s shortlists. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which clashed with Barbie at the box office, did not secure a position in the visual effect category. Still, the film has found a place in makeup, sound and score mentions. The shortlists are highly anticipated because they provide an early indication of which films may receive significant support from particular segments of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and which will be trailing.

Reportedly, the Academy Award category lists are open for voting from January 11 to January 16, with the official nominations released on January 23. The 96th Academy Awards will be held on March 10, with final voting taking place from February 22 to 27.
