HYDERABAD: About 10,000 candidates, who had applied for Icet-2012, did not turn up for the common entrance test held here on Friday for admission to MCA and MBA colleges in the state. The examination was held between 10 am and 12.30 pm at 250 centres in the state.According to Icet convener Prof K Omprakash, the examination passed off peacefully without any glitches. The preliminary key will be posted on the website on May 24 and the last date for receiving the objections to the question paper from students and experts is May 31. They will post the final key on the website on June 2.The Icet-2012 had 1.37 lakh applications which was 10 per cent less than last years’ number of 1.5 lakh. The number of applications received is also much below the number of seats available.MCA and MBA colleges have been facing worst crisis in the past few years being unable to fill a huge number of seats. As about 10,000 of 1.37 lakh candidates abstained from the examination this year, the MCA and MBA colleges will have only 1.27 candidates for about 1.58 lakh seats available. There are 940 MBA and 636 MCA colleges which have about 1 lakh and 58,000 seats respectively.Unable to bear the losses as these courses have fewer takers, some 25 MCA and 15 MBA colleges sought and obtained AICTE’s permission to close down their institutions from this academic year.Further, not all those who have applied for test may opt for a seat. The number of students opting to take these degrees in distance mode has increased in the last couple of years . After last year’s second-phase counselling, only 10,000 of the 31,000 convener quota MCA seats, and only 23,000 out of the 62,000 convener quota MBA seats were filled.
