COIMBATORE: Two persons, who allegedly conned a Bangalore-based couple of their jewels and cash at an apartment in Peelamedu here four months ago, were arrested on Monday. The accused - A Ravikumar (35) and his brother Chandrakumar (27) - had recently been arrested by the Andhra Pradesh police on similar charges in Hyderabad, and had duped many people in a similar fashion in other places such as Bangalore, Ooty, Madurai and Coimbatore. Police said the modus operandi of the accused was to establish contact with those looking for marriage alliances by posing as family members of prospective brides and bridegrooms. “The culprits would pose as affluent people, working in top companies, to gain the confidence of victims. After establishing contact over phone, they will meet up with their victims in a hotel or apartment, where they would provide them snacks laced with sedatives and flee with jewelley once their victims faint,” police said.In September, Ravi Kumar and Chandra Kumar conned a Bangalore-based couple - R Soma Narayanan (50) and his wife Kalyani (45) - who had advertised in newspapers seeking a groom for their daughter. “One of the accused cheated them by saying that he too was looking for a bridge for his son, who working as a software engineer. While posing himself as a Army officer, he claimed that he was injured during a combat operation and hence could not visit them at Bangalore for talks.” After inviting them to an apartment at Peelamedu in Coimbatore, the accused had served them snacks laced with sedatives and made away with 10 sovereigns and Rs 9,000 from them.
