24 huts destroyed in fire in Tiruchy

TIRUCHY:As many as 24 huts were destroyed in a fire that broke out at Ambedkar Nagar, Melapudur here on Thursday.  As soon as the fire broke out, the residents of the area, most of whom were vendors, rushed out and tried to put out the fire. But, their attempts proved futile. Fire and Rescue Services personnel arrived at the spot and doused the fire after battling the flames for more than an hour.  The loss of property was estimated at `10 lakh.Later, District Collector Jayashree Muralidharan visited the spot and consoled the victims. She distributed welfare assistance that included Rs 5000 cash, 10 kg rice, three litres of kerosene, utensils and clothes, contributed by the Red Cross Society.MP P Kumar, MLA R Manoharan and others accompanied the Collector.
